Meet our Occupational Therapist, Katie Shaffer!

 

Katie brings over twenty years of pediatric experience to The Speech Spot. Katie is a 1999 graduate of The University of Missouri's Occupational Therapy Program and also has her master's in education. For the first 14 years of her career, Katie worked at BJC doing both pediatric home care and outpatient therapy at Children's Hospital.  For the past nine years, Katie has worked for the Special School District as a school based occupational therapist working with students from kindergarten through 8th grade. Katie has a particular interest and passion for sensory processing as well as making therapy fun, structured and child centered.

Katie is skilled in the evaluation and treatment of:  

• Fine motor skills

• Visual motor skills

• Motor delays 

• Sensory processing 

• Handwriting 

• Functional motor skills 

 

Katie's approach and philosophy towards treatment includes believing that a child should have some understanding of their therapy goals and help to identify goals and track progress. While that looks different for each child depending on age and developmental level, Katie has observed more engagement and motivation from the child when they are an active participant in the process.
